Torquay Reads is a registered charity dedicated to ensuring that every child in our community owns books of their own. We believe that literacy is the foundation of a child's future, and through community support and targeted initiatives, we provide the tools necessary for every young person in Torquay to succeed and thrive.

Every child in Torquay should have books of their own. These should be of a good quality and appropriate for their age. This is our primary aim.

Our ultimate aim is for Torquay to be recognised, nationally, as Britain’s first reading town, where books are part of every day life. This relies upon the community, businesses, the council, schools, healthcare providers and all other facets of society committing to the importance of reading and getting involved so that books are everywhere!

The foundation of our story
Torquay Reads was born from a simple yet profound observation by a group of local school teachers. In our classrooms, we saw first-hand the bridge literacy builds toward a child's future. However, we also noticed a startling gap: many children did not own books of their own, impacting their ability to dream and explore through reading.
Since our founding, we have committed to ensuring every child in Torquay has access to quality literature. We believe that when a child owns a book, they own a world of possibilities, and we are here to ensure that every young reader in our town can start their own journey.
