Every book a beginning.
Every child a reader.

Torquay Reads is a registered charity committed to improving literacy access by ensuring every child in Torquay owns books of their own.

Children who own books are six times more likely to read above the expected level for their age and four times more likely to enjoy reading.  Yet, in 2024, over 13% of 5 to 8 year-olds did not have a single book of their own.  Obviously, good literacy levels allow children to access a wider education and to communicate effectively.  However, we know that there is also a strong link between reading for pleasure and both higher earnings and greater well-being later in life.

Therefore, a small group of local school-teachers set up Torquay Reads with the aim of ensuring all children in Torquay own books, and become confident readers.
